The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved a 4.22% increase in electricity tariffs for all non-lifeline residential customers and a 1.18% increase in water tariffs for all consumers.
This decision comes after a review was carried out for the third quarter of 2023 by the commission.
In a statement released on Tuesday August 22, 2023, the PURC said the primary objective behind the tariff adjustment is to ensure that the real value of the cost of providing utility services is upheld.
The statement revealed that the increment does not affect the existing rates for lifeline customers, for industrial customers and non-residential consumers like hairdressing salons, barbering shops, chop bars, tailoring and dress-making shops, cold stores, and other small- to medium-scale businesses.
The commission also disclosed that for water tariffs, lifeline customers will also benefit from a freeze on tariff adjustments, with no increase or alteration (0%) in their rates while all other categories of water consumers will see a 1.18% increase in tariffs.
