Ghana Airports Company Limited security personnel swiftly responded after smoke was detected coming from a passenger’s luggage in the luggage wrap area of Terminal 3’s Departure Hall at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to a statement from the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), the incident took place on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 3:27 PM.

The Aviation Security Department’s Operations Room responded promptly, isolating the luggage and evacuating nearby passengers as part of their emergency protocols.

Management confirmed that the passenger has been handed over to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for questioning.

They emphasized the importance of adhering to International Civil Aviation Regulations, particularly regarding the prohibition of traveling with batteries.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) reiterated that any prohibited items found in luggage will be confiscated, and the passenger may face further legal action.

They expressed appreciation for passengers’ cooperation during the evacuation and reaffirmed their commitment to safety. Terminal operations have since resumed smoothly.
