The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has pledged to investigate complaints of excessive electricity meter readings and ensure compensation is paid where faults are confirmed.

His assurance follows growing public concern over alleged faulty meters that consumers say are resulting in unusually high electricity bills.

Dr Jinapor made the remarks during the commissioning of MBH Power Ghana’s new Energy Meters Manufacturing Unit in Tema.

He acknowledged the complaints and said the government would not ignore reports of abnormal power usage linked to malfunctioning meters.

“We will investigate the concerns thoroughly, and where it is established that consumers have been unfairly charged due to faulty meters, appropriate compensation will be provided,” he said.

The Minister emphasised the need for transparency and fairness in the power distribution system, adding that protecting consumers remains a priority for the government.

The commissioning of the new manufacturing unit is expected to boost local production of energy meters, improve quality control and reduce reliance on imports. Authorities say the facility will also enhance monitoring systems and support efforts to address metering challenges in the country.

Dr Jinapor urged industry players to uphold high standards to ensure that electricity consumers receive accurate and reliable billing.
