Energy Minister pledges support to renewable energy sector

Energy Minister and MP for Manhyia South, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says he will support the renewable energy sector players of the government to reach their full potential.

He expressed this commitment at the inaugural ceremony of the 7th Ghana renewable energy fair at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) which brought together companies advocating for the renewable energy agenda.

In attendance were the Hon. Cecilia Dapaah, Minister responsible for sanitation and acting minister for gender who stood in for H.E. President Akufo-Addo, the German Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Daniel Krull, the leadership of the Energy Commission, Bui Power Authority, Volta river Authority and other energy sector players.

Bui Power Authority shared with the gathering, their steady advancement in solar energy generation as they have completed a 50MW farm and currently a 10MW farm under construction. Recently, they have also started the construction of a 5MW floating solar farm.

The Volta river Authority also shared its desire in enhancing the untapped potential of wind power to boost the 10% renewable energy agenda in Ghana.

The German Ambassador underscored the interest of his country as a strategic partner in Ghana’s energy sector vision. “The German Government has already contributed 50 million euros to Ghana for strategic developmental projects. More importantly, another 48 million euros has been earmarked specifically for the energy sector for such Impactful Renewable energy projects”. He said.

He continued “As a matter of fact, we are also ready to support with our technical capacity”, he added.

Hon Prempeh , Hon. Cecilia Dapaah as well as other dignitaries expressed satisfaction with the various innovations that the participating companies had showcased in their respective pavilions and also expressed the hope that such fairs would provide platforms for the growth and advancement of Ghana’s renewable energy potential.
