Energy Ministry moves to secure fuel supply amid Middle East tensions

Richmond Rockson is the Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry.

Government has reaffirmed its resolve to protect Ghana’s energy supply chain following heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have unsettled global oil markets.

The assurance comes after escalating military exchanges involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, raising concerns about broader regional instability. The situation has been compounded by the reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping corridor for crude oil transit.

In response, the Ministry convened a high-level stakeholder meeting involving the National Petroleum Authority, BOST Energies, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies (BIDECs), and other key industry players.

Discussions centered on volatility in the international oil market, potential supply chain disruptions, rising freight costs, and the likely impact on domestic fuel pricing and consumer welfare.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 3, Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry, said the engagement was aimed at ensuring Ghana remains insulated from any adverse effects arising from the unfolding geopolitical crisis.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, underscored the need for proactive interventions to guarantee supply reliability.

“Contingency measures are being reviewed and strengthened to minimise any potential adverse effects on the country arising from the current geopolitical tensions,” he stated.

He directed the National Petroleum Authority to intensify market surveillance and maintain close coordination with industry stakeholders to swiftly address any anticipated supply disruptions.

The Minister further instructed sector agencies to maintain adequate strategic fuel reserves, enhance monitoring of global developments, and ensure stable nationwide distribution.

According to the Ministry, government remains fully committed to safeguarding energy security and protecting consumers from undue hardship. Authorities have pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and provide timely updates as developments unfold.
