The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has announced that its founder, Kofi Akpaloo, who is currently under investigation for alleged financial crimes, is expected to be released on bail soon.
The party’s General Secretary, Jerry Owusu Apaw, confirmed the development, stating that officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) are in the process of inspecting the submitted bail conditions.
Mr Apaw refuted reports that Akpaloo’s bail amount had been reduced from GH₵10 million to GH₵3.5 million.
He confirmed on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem that the bail remains at GH₵10 million with two sureties.
Mr Akpaloo was arrested by EOCO on charges including money laundering, dissipation of public funds and fraud.
Rumors had circulated that he remained in custody because he was unable to meet the bail requirements, even after a supposed reduction in the amount.
Mr Jerry Apaw, however, dismissed these claims.
“Mr. Akpaloo was granted a bail of GH₵10 million with two sureties. We have submitted the required conditions,” he stated, adding that EOCO officials were inspecting the documents and that Akpaloo was currently being interrogated in the presence of his lawyer.
“We were supposed to go to the site to conduct an inspection, but from the site, they are now at the interrogation room,” Apaw explained. “We are hopeful that when the lawyer comes out, he will update us. Let me stress that we have secured the bail conditions, and officials of EOCO are conducting the necessary inspection before his release on bail.”
