The agency mandated to protect the environment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has outlined a series of activities to mark its 50th Anniversary in June 2024.

According to the Executive Director of EPA, Mr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, the celebration which would be under the theme “50 Years of Accounting for Environmental Stewardship” is an opportunity not to only celebrate EPA’s accomplishments but also, to renew the agency’s commitment to protecting and improving Ghana’s environment.

“As we address the challenges ahead, we will do so with gratitude for the public’s continuous support and a firm dedication to our mission which is to co-manage, protect and enhance the country’s environment and find common solutions to global environmental problems,” he said.

He pointed out that to make the milestone celebration truly special, his outfit will engage and educate the public and industry stakeholders on diverse environmental issues.

Mr. Kokofu also announced the quarterly environmental symposiums as part of activities to bring together, renowned experts, scientists, and policymakers to discuss pressing environmental issues in the country.

The symposium he stressed would provide a platform for knowledge exchange, showcasing innovative solutions and best practices and likewise, facilitate collaborations between the EPA and other organizations, fostering a collective effort towards sustainable development.

Part of the anniversary events would be a monthly lecture on topical environmental issues.
Other activities he mentioned include quizzes, verification visits to selected industrial plants/sites, open days for
Clients, journalists, and students to appreciate operations, and guided tours.

The rest of the activities include Heritage Week to honour the Agency’s history and accomplishments, the Volunteer Day/ Corporate Social Responsibility, Time with the Retirees, and Health programs to improve staff well-being.

There would be media engagements to promote the activities and educate the public on topical environmental issues.

Mr. Kokofu therefore urged Ghanaians to fully participate in celebrating 50 years of environmental stewardship.
