‘Ernest Kumi was my good friend’ – Bawumia mourns fallen Akwatia MP

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound grief over the unexpected death of Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, describing him as not only a loyal political ally but a cherished personal friend.

Dr. Bawumia visited the late MP’s family home on Tuesday, July 8, to offer his condolences, a day after Kumi’s untimely passing on Monday, July 7, 2025.

“We received the news during the NEC meeting yesterday, and it has left us all deeply shaken,” Bawumia said. “Ernest wasn’t just an MP—he was my friend. From the beginning of his political journey, I stood by him, and he, in turn, stood by me unwaveringly. No one in Parliament supported me more.”

Recalling their final interaction, Bawumia shared that he had spent time with Kumi just a few days earlier.

“Only last Friday, we sat together at my residence and had a warm conversation. He looked perfectly fine, showed no signs of illness. This news is incredibly difficult to process.”

Clearly emotional, Bawumia assured the family of his continued presence and support throughout the mourning period.

“We are here not just as visitors, but as family. This loss affects all of us,” he said. “Whatever decisions you make regarding his burial, count me in—I want to be part of the arrangements.”
