The Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers has said, their operations will no longer be effective to the economy due to the exportation and shortage of some selected foods used in feeding their poultry.
The association is crying foul based on the fact that, maize grains and other foods meant to feed their fowls are being exported to neighboring countries like Nigeria, Ivory Coast and other countries.
The GNAPF believes that there can be no poultry industry without food thus, maize and soya beans.
In the combination of the two, one ton of feed in the aspect of maize will require 50 – 60%, in that sense, soya beans will require between 15-25% depending on the specific food a farmer would require to fee his poultry but all are within the same range.
In submission, maize and soya beans, in the rearing of Poultry requires about 85% of tons of feed, which means maize and soya are very important in the poultry industry.
Speaking to Kwame Koranteng on Republic FM, Wednesday, June 1, the President of the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers (GNAPF), Victor Oppong Adjei contended that the introduction of Planting for Food and Jobs was solely to absorb the challenges facing the poultry farmers in feeding their poultry, according to the Govt.
Citing the ripple implications of the shortage of these products, he stated that poultry farmers are no longer finding joy in the operations.
The President added that most poultry farmers have quit the job due to shortage and high prices of the feeding products.
“The effects has begun and that’s why I’m saying that most farmers have stopped. In Atwima, over 35 out of 40 farmers are not operating and if it continues to happen like this, the industry will collapse and we must not forget that the industry is creating jobs”, he stated.
“We thought after all these measures, food prices of maize and soya beans will go down but it didn’t happen because our neighboring countries, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin and Togo started to exploit these products and that made the prices to soar higher because of the exportation to these countries”, he said.
