The five Chinese illegal miners arrested in Ellembelle over illegal mining have confessed that two police officers and one senior officer told them to move the excavators away immediately.

They admitted that the two excavators were seized by the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ellembelle, Kwasi Bonzo, who was later arrested by the Police for obstruction.

“Our excavators were seized by DCE but two police officers and one senior officer told us to send them away immediately,” Arrested Chinese galamseyers confessed to Police

The five Chinese Nationals were arrested following a special operation by officers of the Ghana Police Service on September 8, 2022.

The operation was conducted in connection with the two missing but found excavators in Ellembelle in the Western Region.

A statement issued by the Police said “While the team of police officers were escorting the excavator to Takoradi, at the Axim Junction, the DCE of Ellembelle, Mr Kwasi Bonzo organized and led some thugs to attack the police and obstruct the operation.

The DCE and three others were therefore arrested accordingly.

According to the police, Kwasi Bonzo will be arraigned before the court on Thursday, September 8.

He was granted bail hours after his arrest, though it took sometime before his lawyer was given access to him.
