The Supreme Court has ordered Parliament to remove Mr. James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records.
In April 2022, the Supreme Court stripped the Assin North legislator of his parliamentary duties.
The ousted Assin North legislator and his legal team sought an interpretation from the Supreme Court.
In court on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the Supreme Court noted that, based on its findings, the former MP holds Ghanaian and Canadian dual citizenship. In a unanimous decision, the court ruled that James Quayson’s election as MP for Assin North was unconstitutional.
The judgment of the court has put finality and clarity on the MP’s violation of the Supreme Laws of the country prior to filing his application to contest as a Parliamentary.
The court further directed the Parliament of Ghana to officially delete Mr. James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records.
The seven-member justices who interpreted and put finality to the matter are Justice Jones Dotse, Justice Nene Amegatcher, Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo (a CJ nominee), Justice Yonny Kulendi, and Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu.
