The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man who allegedly posed as a medical doctor to defraud unsuspecting victims with false promises of international travel opportunities.
The suspect, identified as Fredrick Papa Kow-Assifuah, was apprehended by operatives of the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters during an intelligence-led operation on Thursday, June 6, 2025, at Kasoa Crispo City, in the Central Region.
At the time of his arrest, Kow-Assifuah was dressed in a white lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck and had arranged to meet another potential victim he had lured through online platforms.
A search of the premises revealed a collection of medical items believed to have been used to bolster his false identity. Items retrieved included:
Two (2) stethoscopes
Three (3) intravenous (IV) drips
Five (5) syringes
Two (2) sample bottles
One (1) roll of plaster
Six (6) bottles of vaccines
One (1) Ghanaian passport
Cash amounting to GH¢8,500.00
Impersonation and Fraud
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted to impersonating a medical doctor affiliated with the United Brain Hospital at Mallam, a suburb of Accra. He also confessed to using the false persona to target women online, initiating fraudulent romantic relationships and subsequently persuading them to pay for non-existent travel arrangements to Europe.
According to police sources, Kow-Assifuah has used this elaborate scheme to defraud multiple victims, exploiting their trust and hopes of securing opportunities abroad.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting investigators with ongoing enquiries. He is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
