The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a significant victory in the Dome Kwabenya constituency, as its Parliamentary Candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, emerged victorious in a closely contested race.
The Electoral Officer at the Dome Kwabenya collation centre declared Akurugu the winner after she garnered 51,634 votes to defeat her New Patriotic Party (NPP) rival, Mike Oquaye Jnr, who obtained 50,477 votes.
This win marks a change in the constituency’s leadership, previously held by Sarah Adwoa Safo of the NPP.
The election, however, was not without drama, as tensions ran high between supporters of both parties. Allegations of attempts to influence the results led to heated confrontations, highlighting the charged atmosphere surrounding the polls.
When the results were announced, Faustina Akurugu’s camp erupted in celebration, with cheers and jubilant chants filling the collation centre. Outside, the waiting crowd broke into thunderous applause and excitement, signaling a moment of triumph for the NDC in a traditionally stronghold constituency of the NPP.
This victory adds to the NDC’s gains in the 2024 general elections and signals a potential shift in the political dynamics of the Dome Kwabenya constituency.
