The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has cautioned the public against the use of Naphthalene-containing products in the country.

According to the FDA, the Naphthalene-containing products have been registered to be used as insecticides.

In a statement dated June 4, the FDA warned parents to keep the product away from children, food, water, and fire, as they are flammable.

In collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency, the FDA said it has provided specific labeling requirements for Naphthalene-containing products.

“In Ghana, the FDA has registered Naphthalene-containing products for use as insecticides. The FDA wishes to inform the public that labels on registered Naphthalene products in Ghana contain sufficient information on their proper use, warnings, and cautions.

“These products should not come into contact with children or food, including water, and as a flammable material, should be kept away from fire.”

They did, however, emphasize that incorrect use could pose health concerns and urged the public to carefully read the instructions on the labels before using.

“The use of Naphthalene will remain safe if the usage instructions are carefully followed. However, misuse of the product contrary to the prescribed instructions could result in adverse effects.”
