Honorable Bryan Acheampong, Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, has stated that one of his top priorities is to stop the smuggling of subsidized fertilizer from Ghana to neighboring countries.
Speaking at the Ministerial Vetting Committee on February 20, 2023, the nominee said even though fertilizer contributes to the growth of agriculture, “I don’t subscribe to the free distribution of fertilizer to farmers because the economics of the country cannot support such initiatives.”
He said even if the government implements such an initiative where fertilizers are distributed freely to farmers, what is the guarantee that the product would not be smuggled to neighbouring countries?
But as part of my mandate, we will ensure that smuggling of fertilizer and cocoa beans to Cote d’Ivoire and other border countries and towns are curtailed in the country.
