The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has called for national unity and shared sacrifice to address Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges.
Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue at the Accra International Conference Center, he emphasized the need for collective effort in rebuilding the economy.
The dialogue, the first of its kind in over a decade, brings together policymakers, business leaders, economic experts, and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for revitalizing Ghana’s economy.
Dr. Ato Forson highlighted the urgency of the discussions, citing the severity of the country’s economic situation, including currency depreciation, inflation, high taxes, and rising fuel and electricity costs. He stressed that the crisis is far from over and requires decisive action to restore stability.
“In these difficult times, we must acknowledge the sacrifices that every Ghanaian is making. The road to recovery demands a unified national effort,” he stated.
The Finance Minister outlined key measures already taken by the government, including a reduction in the number of ministers from 123 to 60 and significant budget cuts at the Office of the President.
Additionally, a prohibition on first-class travel for government officials has been enforced to curb excessive spending.
“These steps are just the beginning of a broader commitment to fiscal discipline and responsible governance,” Dr. Ato Forson assured.
He commended Organized Labour and the Ghana Employers Association for their cooperation in reaching agreements on wages, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
As the country prepares for the upcoming budget presentation on March 11, the insights gained from the dialogue are expected to play a critical role in shaping economic policies and reforms aimed at fostering long-term growth.
Dr. Ato Forson concluded by urging all stakeholders to work together in crafting sustainable solutions, emphasizing that Ghana’s economic future depends on the collective wisdom and commitment of its people.
