A fierce fire swept through several commercial shops at Kantamanto Tazani Lane, near Ecobank in Accra, in the early hours of Tuesday, October 21, 2025, destroying properties and merchandise worth thousands of cedis.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the service received a distress call at approximately 1:31 a.m., prompting an immediate response. The first fire appliance arrived at the scene at about 1:42 a.m.
The inferno, which broke out in a cluster of wooden and metal structures used for trading, spread quickly due to the close proximity of the shops and the combustible nature of materials stored within them.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to prevent the flames from extending to nearby buildings, including banks and other commercial establishments in the busy Kantamanto enclave.
A total of seven fire engines and a Turntable Ladder were deployed from multiple stations — including Circle, Industrial Area, Accra Regional Headquarters, Madina, Legon, and two additional appliances from the National Headquarters — to bring the situation under control.
The combined effort of the firefighting teams helped contain the blaze at around 4:49 a.m., nearly three hours after it started.
The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Ms. Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, visited the scene shortly after the fire was contained to assess the extent of damage and gather firsthand information.
She was accompanied by the Director of Operations, the Greater Accra Regional Commander, and other senior officers who provided operational support.
At the time of reporting, no injuries or casualties had been recorded. Fire officers were still conducting damping-down operations to prevent a possible re-ignition, while investigations were expected to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of losses.
