The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emilia Arthur, has pledged to complete and operationalize the Anomabo Fisheries University, a project that has been abandoned for years despite being over 90% complete.
The university, initiated under the late President John Evans Atta Mills and nearly completed during the administration of John Dramani Mahama, was designed to provide specialized training for the youth in the fishing industry.
However, under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, the facility was neglected, leaving it to deteriorate.
During an inspection tour of the site, Hon. Emilia Arthur was accompanied by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman, Hon. Ebenezer Prince Kojo Ahine, and other party executives.
The team found the facility in a deplorable state, with broken air conditioning units, damaged scientific equipment, and significant structural cracks in the buildings.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Ebenezer Prince Kojo Ahine assured his constituents that he would push for parliamentary action to ensure the university is completed. He emphasized that once operational, the institution would create job opportunities and contribute significantly to the local economy.
Hon. Emilia Arthur also expressed her disappointment in the previous government for failing to get the university running, stating that the neglect had led to financial losses and wasted resources. She, however, assured the community that the current administration is committed to reviving the project and ensuring that it serves its intended purpose.
“The necessary steps will be taken to commission this facility for academic purposes,” she stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the fishing industry through education and training.
Residents of the Anomabo-Bura-Anomoah community have welcomed the minister’s assurances, hoping that the long-abandoned project will finally see completion and benefit the youth in the region.
