Residents of Kanda, a suburb of Accra are demanding the immediate fixing of traffic lights along the Kanda Highway.
According to the residents, due to the nonfunctioning traffic lights on the Kanda highway, their children always have to compete with speeding vehicles in an attempt to cross the road to school.
Republic Press has also observed that aside the overpass traffic lights to Kawukudi traffic lights which are currently working with some officials of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) directing traffic, all the other traffic lights along the stretch are not working.
Ali, a resident of Kanda said “these traffic lights have not been working for some time now, I personally informed the Assembly member but nothing has been done about it”.
A mother with four children waiting to cross the road also said “the government must fix the traffic lights, our children are at risk. Because of the broken traffic lights, the cars don’t stop for our children to cross and because of that, I personally take them to school”.
Another concerned resident said “sometimes the school children are found of crossing the road even when their colleagues are in class, sometimes I have to go and report them to their teachers. This is a highway, they can’t just be crossing like that but we are calling on the government to fix the traffic lights for us”
But in response, the students said because they don’t sell food on the school compound, they are forced to cross the road to buy food but admits that their colleagues usually cross the road recklessly.
Saddick furiously said “so this country unless someone dies, nothing will be done?, if a car knocks any student here because of these toy traffic lights, won’t the government rush and come and fix it?, me I won’t beg them to fix it, if they like they should come and fix it”.
Although there are two National Service personnel under the traffic control assistance officials directing traffic at the nonfunctioning traffic lights, drivers hardly stop for residents or school going children to cross to school.
Rachael Amenupey, an NSS traffic control personnel told the Republic Press that most of the drivers, due to the nonfunctioning traffic lights deliberately speed off when she steps in the road signaling to them to stop for pedestrians, particularly the school children to cross.
“I am use to these challenges, majority of the drivers stop when I signal them but some don’t stop which is dangerous because the school children sometimes after standing for hours attempts crossing the road”.
She added that sometimes people fail to stop when they signal them because they have a perception that they rather cause traffic on the roads, “some of the drivers even insults me when I try to stop them”.
The Republic Press has also observed that most students of the Islamic Training Institute Basic, Kanda struggle to cross the road due to the nonfunctioning traffic lights.
In the early hours of Wednesday, July 14, 2021, between 6:00AM to 9:00AM, most of the school children were seen standing on the shoulders of the road, waiting to cross the road with some crossing amid speeding vehicles.
