A 30-year-old footballer, Mawuli Jonny has served ten years imprisonment after patronizing a ‘hook-up’ lady who claimed he robbed her.
Speaking to Crime Check, Mawuli who was 23 at the time of his imprisonment, said he hired Selina Zakaria on the MEET UP dating app for a sexual engagement and they were to meet at Sankara, a suburb of Teshie-Nungua in Accra.
According to the ex-convict, while on their way to his house, one Isaac Zanyoh Tutey met them, confronted Selina, and took her bag containing an Infinix mobile phone valued at Ghc 450 and three condoms after accusing her of stealing his items when he patronized her sometime ago.
Mawuli said he tried to intervene but his efforts rather led him into a situation that had derailed his life.
To his surprise, he said Selina reported the matter to the Police implicating him thinking it was a planned attack.
According to the prosecution, Isaac was Mawuli’s accomplice who had positioned other members of their gang, Kojo, Bashiru, and Bright (all at large) at the Sankara junction wielding machetes and knives to rob the victim.
Mawuli was then arrested and arraigned before court. He said he told the court that he only tried to rescue Selina as he swore and protested vehemently a misconstrued statement which was written on his behalf by a police officer.
Resentful Mawuli claimed the police took bribe from Isaac to let him go while he was taken on for refusing to pay Ghc 3,000 as a fee for bail.
According to the ex-convict, the complainant later admitted that she lied but it was already late.
Ignorant Mawuli who claimed he didn’t know the difference between guilty and not guilty was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after he said he was misled by the prosecuting officer to plead guilty.
Believing he was innocent, he said he appealed his sentence which led to a reduction from 15 to 10 years.
