Former MMDCEs open endorsement for Bawumia doesn’t translate into votes – Dr. Adomako Kissi

Former MP for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has ruled out that openly supporting candidates in internal party elections does not necessarily ensure they will receive actual votes.

He cautioned Former MMDCEs that their backing of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia may have negative repercussions, potentially harming their standing in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During an appearance on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, June 24, Adomako Kissi expressed skepticism regarding the political strategy of this move, particularly while discussions about officially fixing MMDCEs in the party’s electoral register are taking place.

“It’s politically naive for the MMDCEs to act in this manner,” he stated. “Dr. Bryan Acheampong was advocating strongly in the NEC meeting for the inclusion of MMDCEs in the upcoming electoral register. Thus, if you are under consideration for a register addition and publicly endorse a specific candidate, it diminishes your chances of being included.”

He described the action as ill-advised and lacking careful consideration, calling on party members to be cautious and to prioritize the party’s unity over individual interests.

He emphasized that endorsements do not guarantee votes and could unnecessarily heighten political tensions within the party.

“To me, making a declaration doesn’t assure you will actually vote,” he pointed out. “My main argument is that any emerging politician becomes more concerned when they gain supporters. For the benefit of the party, we need to focus on cohesion to progress.”

Adomako Kissi’s remarks followed an announcement by 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the candidate for the NPP in the general elections of 2028.

At a press conference held at Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, June 23, this group, which identified itself as the “Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia,” characterized their support as a committed effort to secure victory for Dr. Bawumia in both the internal primaries and the national elections.
