A bombshell has dropped in the world of Ghanaian politics, as former National Signals Bureau Boss, Mr. Adu Boahene, finds himself at the centre of a $2m scandal.
The Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine at a press conference, made it clear that if Mr. Adu Boahene wants to negotiate a deal, he’ll still face jail time, but with a reduced sentence if found guilty.
The former NSB boss has been accused of misappropriating funds through contracts he signed on behalf of the state using a private firm he set up. The AG alleged that the suspect created a private business closely resembling the operations of the National Signals Bureau, which he reportedly ran alongside his wife. The alleged misappropriation of funds totals $2,217,815 million, which he was alleged to have invested in properties in Accra and outside the country.
The majority of these properties are located in La, a community in Accra, as well as along the Eastern Corridor road, specifically the Accra-Akosombo stretch. Mr. Adu Boahene, who was arrested on Thursday, March 20th at the Kotoko International Airport upon his return from abroad by the National Investigations Bureau, is still in detention. If found guilty, Mr. Adu Boahene could potentially face a 25-year jail term.
The AG’s press briefing shifting focus from the activities of Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) as advertised, touched on the recent raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Mr. Ernest Addison.
The AG revealed that he had sanctioned the operation and explained the reasoning behind tampering with a CCTV camera at the residence. According to him, the team suspected that some items were being moved from the house, and the only way to confirm this was to retrieve and seize the hard drive of the CCTV system.
