Nigerian footballer Daniel Daga, who plays for Norwegian club Molde, has been sentenced to six months in prison by Nordmøre and Romsdal District Court for committing a sexual act against a person without consent.
Daga is a former captain of Nigeria’s U-20 Flying Eagles. Molde Football Club confirmed that Daga’s lawyer has filed an appeal.
“The case is therefore not legally binding and will be processed further in the legal system,” the club said, indicating that the case is still under review, VG Sport reports.
The outlet said that as an elite league player with a public role, the case affects the club’s future decisions.
“An elite league player has a public role, and the case will have consequences for the club’s future actions,” it said.
VG highlighted that the player has appealed the sentence, and the ruling is not legally final.
“The player announces an appeal, and the fact that the verdict is not final speaks against naming,” it said.
