The Koforidua Circuit Court “B” has rejected a bail application for a former police officer Corporal Emmanuel Nyame, who is facing charges of defiling a 13-year-old girl.
This was after his counsel, Francis Xavier Sosu, argued for bail on grounds that his client is a first-time offender and has surrendered his passports and promised to avail himself anytime throughout the trial.
However, the prosecution opposed the request, citing Nyame’s previous bail violation and evasion of justice for five years.
Facts of the case by the prosecution disclosed that, on April 11, 2019, while the fiancée’ of the accused was at a funeral, he took the victim under the pretext of running an errand.
He drove the victim to a drinking spot called Timberland in Koforidua, where he asked her to help a lady cook.
From there, Nyame continued with the victim to a funeral ground and later to his room at Nsukwao Police Barracks near Ghateco.
The prosecution added that Nyame asked the victim to fold some washed clothes in the room while he went out to get some items.
Corporal Nyame returned to the victim some lines of beads of different colours on his waist, claiming his grandmother gave them to him.
Nyame then forcibly had sexual intercourse with the victim despite her protests, warning her not to tell anyone.
The victim later informed the daughter of her aunt, who then informed another aunt.
The complainant, the victim’s father, reported the incident to the police, and a medical examination confirmed the assault.
Nyame denied the offense in his investigation caution statement however, further investigations led to him being charged with defilement.
Despite being granted bail to appear in court on August 13, 2019, Corporal Emmanuel Nyame absconded.
A bench warrant was then issued for his arrest and was declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service, with information relayed to the Ghana Immigration Service.
Investigations revealed that Nyame left the jurisdiction sneaking through Togo and then to Dubai.
On June 21, 2024, he was arrested at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from Dubai by Immigration Service officials and handed over to the police.
The case has been adjourned to September 26, 2024.
