A violent chieftaincy-related clash in Agona Abodom, a community in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region, has left four people dead and at least 10 others critically injured, following a confrontation between suspected land guards and local residents.

The incident occurred during the celebration of the town’s Akwanbo Festival, when chaos erupted after an alleged rival claimant to the stool reportedly deployed armed land guards to disrupt the festivities.

According to eyewitness accounts, the land guards clashed with residents, leading to a bloody confrontation that claimed the lives of four individuals believed to be part of the invading group. Several others, including residents, sustained severe injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.

The attack also resulted in significant property damage. Two vehicles were torched, and various fixtures including tables, chairs, and furniture at the chief’s palace were vandalized.

Police have since deployed officers to the area to restore order. The bodies of the deceased have been retrieved, while some of the injured landguards were rescued from being lynched by angry youth. Others reportedly fled the scene.

Assemblyman for the Agona Abodom Electoral Area, Alex Donkor, expressed grave concern over the escalating tensions and called for increased security presence. “The situation is deteriorating rapidly. We need urgent intervention from both the police and the military to protect lives and property,” he stated.

The Agona Abodom community, primarily a farming town, has endured over four decades of unresolved chieftaincy disputes. Earlier this year, a new chief was installed in a bid to bring lasting peace. However, Friday’s violent outburst highlights ongoing tensions.

Residents remain on edge, with many expressing fear for their safety and calling on authorities to ensure long-term security in the area.

The police are currently investigating the incident and working to identify the individuals behind the attack.
