The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. DaCosta Aboagye, paid a courtesy call on the Acting Chief Executive of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, on Monday, December 2, 2024, to observe the rollout of the free dialysis service for renal patients.
The NHIA team was welcomed by the Korle Bu team at the Renal Cabin and later moved to the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
During the visit, Dr. Aboagye announced the inclusion of dialysis sessions under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), ensuring that renal patients can now access dialysis services free of charge.
As part of the visit, the NHIA team toured the dialysis facility, engaging with patients and assessing the delivery of care.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, along with key officials, including CNO Aimee Akotey from the Nursing Directorate, Ms. Juliana Mensah from the Human Resource Directorate, and the hospital’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Mustapha Salifu, welcomed the NHIA delegation.
They expressed gratitude to the NHIA and the government for their commitment to improving healthcare access and quality.
The two teams were later joined by Professors J.E. Mensah and Vincent Boima at the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, where they guided the team on a tour of the facility, showcasing its capabilities and ongoing contributions to specialized medical care in Ghana.
The President of the Renal Patients Association of Ghana, Mr Kojo Baffour Ahenkra, who was at the meeting shared his experience that he underwent his dialysis session today without paying for it.
