Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has presented certificates to 22 former kayayei (head porters) who have successfully completed training and are now qualified bus drivers under the Kayayei Empowerment Programme (KEP), a National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) initiative.
The empowerment programme has so far transformed the lives of 5,000 kayayei through various training modules, including soap and detergent making, bakery, bead making, pedicure and manicure, as well as décor and makeup.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Bawumia praised the programme’s impact, highlighting the bold solutions it provides to create sustainable livelihoods.
“While some might offer pans for kayayei to continue carrying loads, we chose transformative solutions, equipping them with skills that change their lives,” he said.
