The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have intensified military operations in Bawku and its surrounding areas as part of ongoing efforts to support civil authorities in maintaining law and order amid recent clashes and intermittent gunfire.
In a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General, Public Relations, the GAF disclosed that its troops conducted a series of cordon and search operations aimed at stabilising the area and enhancing security.
According to the statement, in the early hours of Monday, April 21, 2025, troops deployed at Binduri responded swiftly after hearing sporadic gunshots near the Binduri Central Market. A joint team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, with support from the Ghana Police Service, moved in quickly and cordoned off the area for a thorough search.
“During the operation, one suspected gunman was arrested and handed over to the Police,” Brig. Gen. Aggrey-Quashie stated.
Items retrieved during the operation included one empty M16 rifle magazine, an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and a helmet.
Later in the day, unidentified gunmen attempted to infiltrate the Binduri area but were repelled by military personnel on patrol. An exchange of fire ensued, forcing the gunmen to flee.
“The situation is currently under control, and troops remain on high alert to respond to any emerging threats,” the GAF noted.
The Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding peace and stability in Bawku and its environs.
Brig. Gen. Aggrey-Quashie urged residents and the general public to support the ongoing operations to help restore normalcy.
