The Ghana Armed Forces sent personnel on Wednesday to launch a search and rescue operation called “Operation BOAFO” to help people trapped by floodwaters.
Soldiers collaborated with civilian authorities, including the National Organization for Disaster Management (NADMO), to save the elderly, women and children affected by the floods.
As part of the operation, the Ghanaian Army’s 48th Engineer Regiment made its way into various flood-prone communities in the city such as Osu, Accra Central, Kaneshie, Nungua Barrier, Circle, Odorkor, and other areas.
Several people who were in danger from the flood were helped to escape.
The military said it was committed to protecting life and property, hence their gesture.
Parts of Ghana were flooded again after a downpour on Wednesday 15 June 2022.
The situation caused traffic congestion as some vehicles were unable to pass through the flood water.
Recent rains have caused flooding in most of Accra and there is no end in sight, at least until the end of the rainy season.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has provided indications of more torrential downpours during the season.
Meanwhile, the National Organization for Disaster Management (NADMO) warns of further rainfall and urges residents of flood-prone areas to relocate to higher land as a precaution.
Residents of Kasoa, Cape Coast and Takoradi have been warned to go to safe places.
“All citizens living in these areas are warned to take precautions to protect themselves, especially those living in areas prone to flooding. These people are advised to move to higher ground and find safe shelters in their communities to avoid danger. .
“NADMO asks the general public to pay attention to this weather alert and act accordingly to ensure safety. Rely on your understanding and prioritize your safety, that of your family and your property, ”said George Ayisi, director of communications at NADMO.
