The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a strong warning regarding the unauthorized use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements during demonstrations across the country.
In a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, GAF expressed serious concerns over the increasing trend of individuals wearing unapproved military uniforms while providing security for public figures.
The statement highlighted that this practice has persisted despite prior warnings and has also been observed among individuals operating in illegal mining areas, commonly known as “Galamsey” sites.
GAF emphasized that the unauthorized use of military uniforms not only poses significant security risks but also has the potential to damage the military’s reputation.
“The attention of the Ghana Armed Forces has been drawn to the unauthorized and unlawful use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements by protesters during demonstrations, as well as by individuals providing security for some public figures,” the statement read.
“GAF has also noted with dismay similar illegal acts among persons operating in illegal mining areas and some political activists.
Despite ongoing education and warnings, this concerning trend appears to be increasing.”
The Armed Forces warned that individuals found in violation of these regulations would face arrest and prosecution.
GAF urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to unauthorized military attire.
“In light of the security implications of these illegal acts, GAF will henceforth take decisive actions, including the arrest of persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigour of the law.
We also urge the public to report any suspicious activities involving unauthorized military attire,” the statement added.
GAF reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining the territorial integrity of Ghana, particularly as the country approaches the 2024 general elections.
The cooperation of all citizens is deemed essential in upholding peace and security during this critical period.
