Nine illegal miners have reportedly died following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Tontokrom in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region.
Four others sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby health facility for medical treatment.
The mine, situated in Asutifi South, has long been identified as a hotspot for illegal small-scale mining activities, locally known as galamsey. Authorities noted that the collapse occurred despite ongoing interventions by the National Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Small-Scale Mining (NAIMOS), which has previously faced resistance in the area.
This tragic incident adds to growing concerns about the safety and regulation of small-scale mining operations in the region, where enforcement remains a challenge and illegal mining continues to put lives at risk.
