Families displaced by the recent violent clashes in Gbenyiri in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region received relief and reassurance when the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, led a delegation to their temporary camp on Wednesday 27th August, 2025.
The clashes, triggered by a land dispute, left several people dead, and forced scores of women, children, and households to flee their homes. Many of them are now being sheltered at the Ghana Red Cross–operated camp at the Sawla District Police Headquarters.
The Minister and her team provided cooked meals and water to the displaced families and assured them of government’s continued support.
She stressed that the Ministry, under the mandate of the Social Protection Act, would activate emergency interventions such as food relief, psychosocial services, and protection measures to safeguard the welfare of the most vulnerable.
“As a government, we are committed to restoring dignity and hope to affected families. Women, children, and the elderly must never be left to suffer the heaviest burden of conflict,” she stated.
She also thanked President John Dramani Mahama for his dedication to protecting vulnerable populations and expressed appreciation to the Ghana School Feeding Secretariat and its caterers for the timely mobilisation in preparing meals for the victims.
As part of her mission in Sawla, the Minister together with the Savannah Regional Minister paid a courtesy call on the Sawla Naa to reinforce collaboration with traditional and regional authorities.
The Minister called for calm and urged all parties to pursue peaceful dialogue, reaffirming government’s commitment to stand by the victims until normalcy is restored.
The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection is working closely with the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC), NADMO, the Ghana Red Cross, and other partners to ensure food, shelter, and essential services are delivered to the displaced.
