The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has commended the Tamale High Court for its ruling to sentence Hajia Mohammed Serena and Latifa Bomaye to 12 years in prison for their involvement in the heinous murder of the vulnerable 90-year-old Akua Denteh at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, on 23rd July 2020.

According to the Ministry, “This ruling will undoubtedly go a long way to discourage unscrupulous individuals from committing such heinous and cruel act in future.”

“We also commend the Ghana Police Service for apprehending the offenders and the Staff of the MOGCSP, Social Welfare Officers and the Civil Society Organizations for their constant follow-ups on the case.

The Ministry is urging the public to report offenders of similar cases to the Ghana Police Service. This will go a long way to save innocent lives.

Finally, “we want to use this platform to plead to the public, traditional leaders, and respected stakeholders to help us eradicate harmful traditional practices in the country.”

Madam Akua Denteh was beaten to death in Kafaba on Thursday, July 23, 2020, by residents of the small town who accused her of being a witch and the source of certain strange activities in the area, including the slow pace of the town’s development.
