The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP), in collaboration with the Department of Gender and Development, marked the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) with an “Empowerment Walk” through the principal streets of Accra.
The event aimed to raise awareness about gender equality, advocate for the rights of women and girls, and celebrate progress made since the Beijing Declaration three decades ago.
This year, Ghana adopted the global IWD theme, “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” with the campaign hashtag #ForAllWomenAndGirls to reinforce its commitment to gender inclusivity and progress.
Speaking at the event, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, emphasized Ghana’s advancements in gender equality, highlighting key initiatives such as the Affirmative Action Act and the establishment of the Women Development Bank.
She also celebrated the historic appointment of Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President, describing it as a milestone that inspires women nationwide.
Dr. Lartey reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to empowering women by creating platforms for them to showcase their innovations. She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting survivors of sexual and gender-based violence through initiatives such as the Orange Support Center and the BOAME Mobile Application.
Addressing participants, MoGCSP Chief Director Dr. Afisah Zakariah underscored the importance of investing in women and girls as a catalyst for national development. She commended the contributions of women across various sectors and acknowledged the role of men in championing gender equality.
In a solidarity message, the Country Director of UNFPA, Dr. David Wilfred Ochan, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry to promote gender equality. He pledged continued support to amplify efforts aimed at ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and girls across the country.
Closing the event, the Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Faustina Acheampong, called for heightened attention to challenges facing women and girls, emphasizing the need to dismantle stereotypes that hinder their progress. She urged society to recognize women’s invaluable contributions to national development.
The 2025 International Women’s Day celebration served as a powerful reminder of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to advance gender equality and empower women and girls.
