The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong warning to Heads of Basic Schools over allegations of unauthorized Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration fees imposed on final-year students.
In a press release dated February 12, 2025, the GES emphasized that these additional fees are illegal and instructed all school heads engaging in the practice to cease immediately. Regional and District Directors have also been directed to monitor the situation and caution school heads accordingly.
The statement further mandates that any head of a school who has already collected such fees must refund the money to affected students promptly. Failure to comply, the GES warned, would result in serious sanctions.
Additionally, the GES reminded schools that late registration of BECE candidates will not be accepted. All eligible students must be registered within the stipulated period set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The general public, particularly parents and guardians, has been urged to take note of this directive and report any violations to the appropriate authorities.
The release was signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the Public Relations Unit at GES.
