Ghana has since the beginning of 2021 been admitted into the World Petroleum Council, the basis of eligibility to participate in the 23rd World Petroleum Congress in Houston, Texas, USA.
The World Petroleum Council is a non-advocacy, non-political organization with charitable status in the U.K. and has accreditation as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) from the United Nations (UN). The WPC is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable management and use of the world’s petroleum resources for the benefit of all.
The decision by Ghana to join the council comes on the back of the need to draw from the support and experiences of member countries and major international oil and gas players in the exploitation of our hydrocarbon resources.
Since taking office as Energy Minister earlier this year, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has given a strong indication of his support for Ghana’s membership. Ghana also stands to benefit from first-hand information on major decisions that bothers on global energy future.
Ghana for example stands to benefit at first-hand from Chevron and Exxon’s latest technology on reducing carbon emissions in the pursuit of global commitment to the Paris agreement as announced at the opening session of the congress, among others.
The deployment of these technologies and the skills therein is shared exclusively with member countries.
The platform will also provide information on new costs of production and development in various areas of the oil and gas industry as well as investment opportunities.
The Council is the governing body of the World Petroleum Congress which convenes once a year. Its global membership elects the President and an Executive Committee every three years to develop and execute its strategy.
The Council also selects the host country for the next World Petroleum Congress from the candidate countries.
To ensure the scientific and topical quality of the event, the Council elects a Congress Programme Committee whose members are responsible for delivering the high-level content for its Congresses.
The Secretariat of the World Petroleum Council is based in London, under the leadership of the Director General.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says he is keen on ensuring that Ghana makes the most out of her membership on the council towards the utilization of our petroleum resources for the overall benefit of the citizens of Ghana
