On January 7, 2025, newly inaugurated President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, hosted Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, during a high-level meeting aimed at bolstering relations between the two West African nations.
The two leaders discussed various strategic initiatives to enhance bilateral cooperation and drive economic growth in their respective countries. Key topics included security, economic development, and the deepening of historical ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso.
President Mahama expressed his gratitude to Captain Traoré for attending his inauguration, emphasizing the importance of solidarity among regional leaders. “I was honoured that he left his busy schedule to join us. It shows the strength of our partnership and the importance of unity in our region,” said President Mahama.
The Ghanaian president also conveyed his support for Burkina Faso amid ongoing terrorist threats, pledging to collaborate closely with Captain Traoré to promote peace and stability. “Without peace, there cannot be development. We stand with Burkina Faso in their fight against terrorism,” Mahama stated.
In the spirit of collaboration, President Mahama announced plans for a state visit to Ouagadougou in the near future. He described the current moment as the beginning of a new era in Ghana-Burkina Faso relations, adding, “We are at the start of a partnership that will redefine our cooperation.”
During the meeting, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to existing agreements, including a railway interconnection project and memorandums of understanding covering security, sports, leisure, and education.
The discussions between the two leaders underline their shared vision for regional progress and unity, paving the way for increased cooperation across multiple sectors.
