The Ghana Army’s 66 Artillery Regiment and the Ghana Police Service have concluded a week-long joint training exercise across the Volta and Oti regions to prepare for the upcoming general elections.
The training, conducted under Operations CALMLIFE and PEACE TRAIL, aimed to enhance interoperability between the two security agencies and refine their response to potential election-related security threats.
Held from August 12 to 16, 2024, at the Nkwanta North Assembly Building Complex in Kpassa and the Volta Barracks in Ho, the training covered a range of topics including standard operating procedures, rules of engagement, media relations, crowd dispersal, and joint operations.
Lieutenant Colonel Jalali Din Ibrahim, Acting Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, emphasized the importance of building trust between the military and police while urging participants to maintain professionalism and discipline. Assistant Commissioner of Police Andrews Boadu-Ekumah, Volta Regional Police Commander, encouraged teamwork and mutual respect between the two forces.
A culminating simulation exercise, dubbed “EX PEACE ANGEL,” tested the trainees’ ability to respond to various election-related scenarios, such as voter agitation, armed attacks on polling stations, and electoral protests. The exercise evaluated the police’s capacity to request military assistance when overwhelmed and the military’s ability to effectively take over security operations.
The successful completion of the joint training demonstrates the commitment of both the Ghana Army and the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process.
