A convoy under military protection escorting civilians along the volatile Bawku–Bolgatanga route has come under deadly attack, leaving three civilians and seven assailants dead.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, May 27, 2026. According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the convoy—made up of about 140 civilians—was being escorted from Bawku to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region when it came under intense gunfire from unknown assailants.
The attackers reportedly opened fire indiscriminately on the convoy along the highway, targeting both the escorting troops and the civilian vehicles.
Military personnel accompanying the convoy immediately returned fire, engaging the attackers in a gun battle that officials say prevented a potentially higher death toll.
Troops Repel Attack, Launch Counter-Operation
The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed in a press release signed by the Acting Director-General of the Department of Public Relations- Naval Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, that the ambush was successfully repelled, with seven suspected attackers killed during the exchange.
In the hours that followed, troops carried out search and pursuit operations across nearby communities, leading to the arrest of ten suspects believed to be linked to the attack.
During the operation, security forces also recovered a G3 rifle, two loaded magazines, and 176 rounds of ammunition. Military sources indicated that the weapons were retrieved from a suspect who allegedly attempted to evade arrest by hiding in a mosque.
Authorities say the arrested individuals are currently in custody and assisting investigators as efforts continue to dismantle the network behind the attack.
Separate Attack Heightens Tension
In a related development, security agencies have confirmed the arrest of three additional suspects in connection with a separate but equally disturbing attack on passenger buses at Bazua in the Binduri District.
That incident, which occurred near the Bazua military barracks, involved gunmen opening fire on buses believed to be travelling along the same Bawku to Bolgatanga route under military escort.
One civilian was confirmed dead, while several others sustained serious injuries.
Authorities are yet to release a full casualty count, but sources indicate that some victims remain in critical condition.
Heightened Security and Community Concerns
Following the attacks, security presence has been significantly increased across Binduri and surrounding areas, particularly along the Bazua–Bawku stretch.
Military personnel have taken control of key access routes, mounted checkpoints, and intensified patrols in a bid to prevent further violence and restore order.
However, the heavy deployment has also sparked concerns among some residents. Community members have alleged instances of misconduct by security personnel, including reported assaults and damage to property during operations.
These claims have not been officially confirmed, but they have contributed to rising anxiety in the area, with some residents reportedly fleeing their homes over safety concerns.
Authorities Call for Cooperation
The Ghana Armed Forces has urged residents to cooperate with ongoing security operations and avoid any actions that could obstruct personnel in the discharge of their duties.
Officials also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the attacks and expressed hope for the recovery of the injured.
