The High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, H.E. Myriam Montrat, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Monday, March 3, 2025, to discuss deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Montrat highlighted the strong similarities between Canada and Ghana, particularly as multicultural societies. She welcomed Ghana’s emphasis on economic diplomacy, noting that it aligns with Canada’s foreign policy priorities. She expressed interest in fostering knowledge-sharing between the two countries in this area.
The High Commissioner also outlined Canada’s renewed engagement with Africa through key flagship initiatives, focusing on peace and security, human rights, and agriculture. She emphasized the importance of renewing the Elsie Initiative Agreement with the Ghana Armed Forces, citing the program’s success in promoting women’s participation in peacekeeping operations.
Hon. Ablakwa, in turn, expressed appreciation for Canada’s continued support and proposed negotiations for a Bilateral Air Service Agreement to facilitate direct flights between the two nations. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to working with Canada on renegotiating the Elsie Initiative for Women in Peace Operations, recognizing its role in capacity-building within the military.
Additionally, the Minister introduced Ghana’s plans to establish a Women’s Bank, requesting technical assistance from Canada to support its development.
The discussions reinforced both nations’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation in trade, security, and women’s empowerment.
