The Government of Ghana has issued a firm condemnation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the development as an unlawful and dangerous assault on democratic governance in the West African nation.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the government said it “strongly and unequivocally condemns the coup d’état carried out by elements of the military,” adding that the action disrupts the electoral process that followed peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.
Ghana expressed deep concern over what it termed a “brazen attempt” to overturn the will of the Bissau-Guinean people. According to the statement, the coup has derailed the country’s democratic progress and obstructed the announcement of official election results, which was scheduled for November 27.
Calling for the immediate restoration of constitutional order, Ghana urged all parties in Guinea-Bissau to respect the democratic process and resolve any electoral grievances through peaceful and legally recognised channels.
The government also demanded the protection of all citizens and foreign nationals in the country, stressing the urgent need to ensure the safety of officials serving with the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission.
Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and refrain from actions that could heighten tensions. It reaffirmed its support for ECOWAS and the African Union in efforts to restore stability, in line with regional and continental protocols on democracy, governance, and constitutional rule.
