Ghana evacuates Embassy staff in Iran

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has successfully evacuated all diplomatic staff from the Ghanaian Embassy in Tehran, citing a deteriorating security situation in the region.

In a statement released earlier today, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto confirmed that the mission is now closed sine die (indefinitely).

The move comes amid what the Minister described as “tempestuous times”, signalling a proactive step by the government to ensure the safety of its overseas personnel.

He reassured the public that the evacuation was executed without incident.

According to the Minister, the returning diplomats are not only safe but also remain in “high spirits” following their departure from the Iranian capital.

“The safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” Okudzeto stated, emphasising that the decision to shutter the mission was rooted in the state’s obligation to protect its citizens and representatives abroad.

While the statement did not provide a specific timeline for when diplomatic operations might resume, the use of the term sine die suggests that the embassy will remain closed until a thorough reassessment of the regional stability is conducted.

The Ministry has yet to announce alternative arrangements for Ghanaian citizens currently residing in Iran who may require consular services.

Below is the full statement

I am delighted to announce that we have conducted a successful evacuation of all our embassy staff in Iran.

The Ghanaian diplomats are safe and in high spirits.

Ghana’s embassy in Iran is now closed sine die.

The safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaians remains our utmost priority in these tempestuous times.
