The Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) has donated Three Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢300,000) to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), reinforcing Corporate Ghana’s growing support for national healthcare financing and social protection.

The donation follows a recent engagement between the management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and Ghana Gas as part of a broader appeal to corporate institutions to support the Fund’s mandate of providing financial relief for medical care, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations.

Receiving the GMTF delegation led by its Administrator Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Madam Judith Adjobah Blay, demonstrated swift commitment to the Fund’s objectives, approving the donation shortly after the meeting. Beyond the financial contribution, Madam Blay also pledged Ghana Gas’ support toward retooling the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region, a major referral facility serving communities where Ghana Gas operates extensively.

Officials of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund described the gesture as a strong example of “compassion in action” and a demonstration of national responsibility, noting that the partnership goes beyond funding to include long-term institutional support for public health infrastructure.

Background: Ghana Medical Trust Fund

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) is a government-backed initiative established to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by addressing gaps in medical financing, especially for critical illnesses including non-communicable diseases and high-cost treatments that remain beyond the reach of many Ghanaians.

The Fund mobilizes resources from government allocations, private sector contributions, development partners, and individual donors to support medical care, procure essential equipment, and strengthen health facilities nationwide. Since its inception, GMTF has actively engaged Corporate Ghana to build sustainable partnerships aimed at improving access to quality healthcare.

Corporate Ghana’s Role

The donation by Ghana Gas comes at a time when healthcare advocates continue to call for stronger public–private collaboration to address systemic challenges in Ghana’s health sector, including equipment shortages, rising treatment costs, and regional disparities in healthcare delivery.

By extending its support to Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Ghana Gas’ intervention is expected to directly benefit thousands of patients in the Western Region, a key industrial zone with growing healthcare demands.

Management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund expressed appreciation for Ghana Gas’ confidence in the Fund and described the partnership as an example of how dialogue, urgency, and shared national values can translate into meaningful social impact.

As the Fund intensifies its outreach to corporate institutions, the Ghana Gas contribution is likely to serve as a benchmark for similar partnerships aimed at strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.
