The Ghana Health Service (GHS) Directorate in the Volta Region has launched an internal investigation following the detention of one of its staff-drivers who was arrested over suspected narcotic substance possession.

In a press release signed by the Volta Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dodor, the directorate said its attention had been drawn to a viral report alleging the unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs involving a staff driver.

The statement identified the individual as Mr. Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, a driver with the Volta Regional Health Directorate, and said the incident occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026.

According to the Directorate, the Transport Unit received information that Mr. Dogbey had been arrested and detained at the Regional Police Headquarters in Ho while driving an official vehicle belonging to the Directorate.

“The arrest was on the account of driving a vehicle with registration number GV 2460-14 belonging to the Directorate, reportedly loaded with items suspected to be narcotic substances,” the statement said on Sunday.

Following the report, management dispatched a team to the Regional Police Headquarters to verify the incident and engage the police on the matter.

“The incident was confirmed by the Police, and the driver is currently in police custody assisting with investigations,” the Directorate stated.

While police investigations are ongoing, the Volta Regional Health Directorate said it has initiated its own processes to independently examine the circumstances surrounding the case.

“The Regional Health Directorate has also initiated processes to constitute a Committee of Enquiry to independently investigate the incident,” the release noted.

The directorate added that beyond the immediate investigation, steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents involving official assets.

“Additionally, measures are being put in place to strengthen monitoring and tracking of all official vehicles,” it said, stressing that the move is aimed at improving oversight and accountability.

The directorate also sought to assure the public of its institutional values, stating that it “remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism in the delivery of health services.”

The release emphasized that the directorate will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
