Thousands of Ghanaians are expected to benefit from faster, more secure, and convenient passport services as Ghana launched its new chip-embedded passport system on Monday, marking a historic leap forward in public service delivery.

At a ceremonial launch in Accra, dignitaries including the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, joined government officials, state agency heads, and private sector partners to officially kick off the rollout of the modernized passport regime.

For many Ghanaians, the event signals the end of long queues, delays, and uncollected passport booklets—and the beginning of a smarter, more citizen-friendly process.

“Today symbolizes a reset,” said Minister Ablakwa during the launch. “We are ushering in a new era of modernization, convenience, and deep respect for Ghanaian citizens.”

The upgraded passports—featuring a chip-embedded polycarbonate data page—incorporate high-level security features aligned with global standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Ghana now joins a select group of countries meeting ICAO’s 2030 deadline for advanced travel documents.

Key Features of the New Passport System:

  1. Chip-Embedded Technology: All new passports will be embedded with chips that make forgery nearly impossible.

  2. 24-Hour Passport Office Operations: The Accra Passport Head Office will operate round the clock to serve the public.

  3. Nationwide Courier Delivery: Ghana Post and logistics partner Troskit will deliver passports directly to applicants’ doorsteps.

  4. Real-Time Application Tracking: A new e-tracking system lets applicants monitor their passport’s progress from application to delivery.

  5. Faster Turnaround Times: Regular applications will be processed within 15 working days, with expedited service available in just five days.

  6. Lower Fees: Application fees have been slashed from GHS500 to GHS350—pending final approval from Parliament.

Officials noted that the new passport should be handled with care, avoiding exposure to heat, liquids, or bending. Citizens are advised not to insert other cards into the passport or store it in back pockets.

The public can access information or assistance via a dedicated 24-hour hotline: 0302 75 4200.

This sweeping reform—both technical and procedural—is part of a broader effort to make government services more responsive and respectful to citizens’ time and dignity.
