The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral video circulating on social media that appears to show a police officer repeatedly slapping a handcuffed suspect.

The officer can be seen in the footage demanding compliance from the suspect while engaging in the alleged assault.

The video has sparked widespread public outrage, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to condemn the officer’s behaviour and call for accountability.

Numerous posts have decried the incident as an abuse of power and a violation of the suspect’s rights.

In response to the public outcry, the Police Service confirmed that its Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) is investigating the incident. According to a statement, the PSB aims to verify the authenticity of the video, identify those involved, and take appropriate disciplinary action if the officer is found culpable.

“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. Acts that undermine public trust in the police will not be condoned,” the statement assured.

The Service has urged the public to remain calm as the investigation proceeds, promising transparency and fairness in handling the matter.

This incident adds to ongoing discussions about police conduct and accountability in Ghana, with many calling for reforms to ensure that officers uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens.
