Ghana and Jamaica have reached an agreement on a labour exchange arrangement under which Ghanaian teachers and nurses will be deployed to the Caribbean country, creating overseas job opportunities for local professionals while deepening bilateral relations.

The agreement was disclosed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, after talks with Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Michael Holness, during an official visit by a Ghanaian delegation.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Mr Ablakwa said the discussions covered a special labour exchange programme expected to begin within the year. He did not state the number of teachers and nurses to be involved or outline the detailed terms of engagement.

Mr Ablakwa said Dr Holness conveyed thanks to President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for the support offered following the destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa.

According to the Foreign Minister, the Jamaican leader described the gesture as one Jamaica would remember.

The talks also included plans to initiate a Ghana–Jamaica Defence Cooperation Agreement, pointing to a broadening of relations beyond diplomacy and cultural links.

Mr Ablakwa said the two sides examined business prospects for Ghanaian companies, as Jamaica prepares a wide-ranging infrastructure renewal programme under what Dr Holness referred to as a “build back better” agenda.

The discussions are expected to open space for Ghanaian firms interested in operating in the Caribbean.

At the global level, Dr Holness pledged support for President Mahama’s proposed United Nations resolution seeking recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as the greatest crime against humanity and renewed calls for reparations.

Mr Ablakwa said Ghana looks forward to hosting Dr Holness, who has indicated an interest in visiting the country in the near future.

For many Ghanaians, especially teachers and nurses facing limited openings at home, the proposed labour exchange presents an opportunity to work abroad while contributing to Ghana’s expanding diplomatic and economic presence.
