Ghana risks food crisis if gov’t fails to procure fertiliser – Bryan Acheampong

Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has warned of a potential rise in food prices and possible shortages in the coming months, attributing the situation to what he describes as the government’s failure to procure fertilizer ahead of the new farming season.

Dr. Acheampong emphasized that without adequate fertilizer supplies, agricultural productivity could be severely compromised, leading to diminished crop yields.

He further noted that this shortfall could exacerbate existing challenges in the food supply chain, ultimately affecting consumers across the nation. The former minister called for immediate action from the government to rectify the procurement issues and ensure that farmers have the necessary resources to sustain their operations.

He urged stakeholders in the agricultural sector to collaborate on strategies that could mitigate the impact of these shortages. In light of the approaching planting season, Dr. Acheampong’s warnings serve as a critical reminder of the need for proactive measures to safeguard food security.

Speaking to party delegates during the final leg of his Greater Accra regional tour on Saturday, January 17, Dr. Acheampong highlighted that the current food supplies in the country are largely the result of interventions implemented under the NPP government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

He cautioned that without timely procurement of fertilizers and adequate support for farmers, food production could decline significantly, threatening food security in the months ahead.

“There was no rain in 2024, so all the fertilizers that were brought were not used. However, when the rains came early in 2025, farmers used the fertilizers, resulting in the bumper harvest that year. This was part of the NPP’s plan.

”Fertilizers should have been saved in 2025 for use in 2026, but that was not done. As a result, with the current shortage of fertilizers, food prices are expected to rise by mid-2026,” he stated.
