Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has successfully restored water supply to the Ho Municipality after a critical pump failure at the Kpeve Water Abstraction Plant disrupted services earlier this week.
The swift resolution, achieved within a 48-hour window, follows days of intensive efforts by technical teams to implement emergency repairs and deploy alternative water solutions.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, Stanley Martey, GWL’s Chief Manager of Public Relations and Communications, confirmed that all three malfunctioning pumps responsible for drawing raw water to the treatment plant have been repaired.
The breakdown had left residents and businesses grappling with shortages, prompting GWL to activate contingency measures, including tanker deliveries to hospitals, schools, and other essential institutions.
“Our teams worked tirelessly to meet the 48-hour restoration target set by Managing Director Hon. Adam Mutawakilu,” it stated.
“We recognize the hardship this incident caused and sincerely thank the public for their patience as we expedited both repairs and short-term relief efforts.”
As part of a phased strategy to stabilize supply, GWL has secured two new high-capacity pumps, expected to arrive by the end of March. These will serve as a medium-term reinforcement to the aging infrastructure.
However, the company emphasized that broader solutions are already in motion to address systemic gaps between rising demand and existing capacity.
Central to these plans is the government-backed expansion of the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant, a long-term project aligned with the national “Water for All” agenda.
The upgrade aims to significantly boost production and ensure reliable access for Ho and neighboring communities amid rapid urbanization and population growth.
The statement highlighted the government’s commitment to equitable water access, citing President John Dramani Mahama’s prioritization of sustainable infrastructure.
“His Excellency’s vision ensures no community is left behind,” it added.
“This expansion is a critical step toward future-proofing our services.”
While normal supply resumes, GWL has urged consumers to use water judiciously as crews continue monitoring the reactivated pumps.
The company also pledged transparency in updating the public on the new pumps’ installation and treatment plant expansion timelines.
“We remain committed to improving service delivery and apologize again for the inconvenience caused,” the statement said.
“GWL values the partnership of all stakeholders as we work to fulfill our mandate.”
The resolution has been met with relief by local leaders, though some residents have called for accelerated infrastructure investments to prevent recurring outages. For now, the focus remains on sustaining progress—and ensuring water keeps flowing.
