A Ghanaian doctor, Dr. Taufiq Tareeq, has been praised for his swift intervention during a medical emergency aboard a Delta Airlines flight earlier this week.

In a Facebook post recounting the incident, Dr. Tareeq said the cabin crew suddenly announced an emergency and asked if there was any medical professional on board.

When no one initially responded, he felt a strong sense of duty and volunteered to help.

According to his account, most of the passengers were Ghanaians, many of whom appeared surprised to see him step forward.

“I perceived the surprise on their faces as if they were saying, ‘Rasta, is the doctor?’” he wrote humorously.

Dr. Tareeq found the patient unconscious briefly and sweating heavily. He requested a blood sugar test, which revealed a dangerously low reading of 35 mg/dl – a case of hypoglycemia.

After administering sugar, the patient’s condition gradually improved.

The cabin crew later took his details and offered a $200 token of appreciation for his assistance.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Tareeq cautioned against judging people by appearance. “Well, don’t judge a book you have not read,” he concluded.
